The Foundation of Dreams

Nyla’s story begins right here in Immokalee, a community filled with hardworking families who strive tirelessly to provide for their children. For Nyla, Pathways wasn’t just a child care center—it was the foundation of her future.

Nyla’s childhood was shaped by the unwavering love of her mother, a committed parent raising two children on a modest income. Her mom believed deeply in the power of education, often reminding Nyla and her brother, “Education is something no one can take away from you. It’s the first step to doing the things I couldn’t do.”

At Pathways, Nyla found a second family. The warm smiles of her teachers and the constant encouragement from the caring staff made her feel safe, valued, and capable of anything. She remembers moments of joy, like racing around the playground with her friends, and the quiet comfort of knowing someone was always there to guide her. While Nyla thrived, her mother could work with peace of mind, knowing her children were in good hands.

Those early days at Pathways equipped Nyla with the confidence and tools to succeed. As she transitioned to school, she was ready to face challenges head-on. By high school, she was already excelling, balancing her classes with college courses to earn an associate’s degree. But Nyla’s dreams didn’t stop there. She set her sights on a future in nursing, fueled by her determination to give back to others.

With hard work and a scholarship, Nyla earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing and began her career. Today, she’s a cardiac nurse at NCH, helping patients recover from heart procedures with care and compassion. Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed; she was honored with the prestigious Daisy Award, a recognition given by patients to exceptional nurses. Now, Nyla is pursuing her Master’s Degree to become a nurse practitioner, with plans to return to Immokalee and serve the community that shaped her.

When Nyla reflects on her journey, she often thinks back to Pathways and the role it played in shaping her life. “Education is the great equalizer,” she says. “Pathways gave me the foundation I needed to dream big and work hard. But there are still so many children in Immokalee who haven’t had the opportunities I had.”

Nyla knows firsthand the struggles families in Immokalee face. “There are parents, just like my mom, working tirelessly to provide for their kids, but they can’t afford quality early education,” she shares. “Imagine what we could achieve if every child here had access to what I had. Think about the doctors, teachers, engineers, and caregivers we could nurture.”
