| Meet Tommy, a remarkable four-year-old whose journey showcases the transformative power of early education. At just two years old, Tommy joined Pathways, navigating the basics: potty training, following routines, and learning to communicate his needs. Like many children his age, structure felt overwhelming, and social skills were a challenge.
Tommy’s parents, hardworking residents of Collier County, were determined to provide him with the high-quality early education he deserved, despite the pressures of balancing work and high living costs. “Early education is the foundation for learning,” his mother reflects, recalling the daunting search for the right preschool. “We needed a place where Tommy would be safe, cared for, and nurtured while we worked. From our first visit, I knew Pathways was that place.”
At Pathways, patient teachers and a supportive environment helped Tommy flourish. By age three, he was communicating more clearly, making friends, and reaching milestones that once seemed out of reach. But progress doesn’t happen overnight. When Tommy entered the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program, he still faced challenges. “Circle time was tough for him,” shares Ms. Ana, his teacher. “Sitting still, focusing, even participating—it wasn’t easy.”
Pathways met these challenges with creativity and determination. Smaller group activities and one-on-one support gave Tommy the confidence to learn at his own pace. Slowly, breakthroughs emerged. “He went from saying, ‘I can’t do it’ to confidently writing his name and even helping his classmates,” Ms. Ana recalls with pride.
Tommy’s growth wasn’t just academic—it was transformational. His STAR Early Literacy score soared from 499, signaling ‘urgent intervention,’ to 648, meeting-or-exceeding benchmarks. He now recognizes 18 uppercase and 14 lowercase letters, a leap from just two and one at the start of the year. But the numbers only tell part of the story. |
